Having 20 minutes to spare before the evening study bell, three of us decided to play basketball. And then we ended up breaking the backboard in the basketball dung stand. As if my principal [aka hostel warden, aka Father(at church)] was looking for a reason to call my parents. He summoned them the day after the incident. I was asked to pay a fine of Rs 50000. My parents barely funded our education and it was like a blow to their head. I couldn't speak up and kept my head low all the time.
A strange demand came from the principal, which caught me by surprise. If I showed him the boys who sneak out of the hostel at night to watch movies, he would spare me. I was elected as the hostel head for the year. Without my help or knowledge, this would never have happened. The tables suddenly turned. He was no longer interested in repairing the broken glass board. I was reluctant to cooperate and couldn't give up on my friend. He got angry and suspended me for 3 days.
He knew a few of the boys, but he wanted solid proof to band-aid his shame. My friends agreed to surrender when they learned about my dilemma. I wrote an alibi stating their name and I was charged Rs 8000 for breaking the glass. My friends were dismissed from the hostel.
My principal showed me how shrewd a person can be. Taught me some crucial life lessons
Two people don't see the same event as an opportunity. While one sees it as a problem, the other looks to capitalize on it.
